Chronic Hepatitis: Etiology

The most important diseases that cause chronic hepatitis are (1) autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) (previously called autoimmune chronic active hepatitis), (2) chronic hepatitis B, which is caused by infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV), and (3) chronic hepatitis C, caused by hepatitis C virus (HCV) [see Table 1 -- omitted].
